Meet your (Veteran) neighbor

Two minutes with Tech. Sgt. Carissa Perry

Why did you join the military?

Mainly for the education benefits. At the time of my enlistment, I was employed in the retail industry and didn’t see a clear future or path for myself with the company I worked for. My initial intent was only to remain in the military for one enlistment. I chose not stay Active Duty but did not want to leave the military completely. I transferred directly into the Air National Guard through a program called Palace Front.

What did you do in the military?

Communications-Computer Systems, which evolved to what is now known as Cyberspace Support. My background has mainly been in various aspects of Information Security.

What did you learn?

The military taught me about leadership, discipline and resiliency, to name a few things. It has also allowed me to understand and appreciate the sacrifices made by those who serve.

Why did you move to Charlotte?

Prior to moving, I commuted from Goldsboro one weekend per month for drill with the Air National Guard. I wanted to be closer to the installation and an employment opportunity became available that allowed me to relocate.

What was the hardest part about your transition back to the civilian workforce/community?

Lack of knowledge about resources available to veterans.
